Now seen as the "fifth" fashion capital alongside the historical "Big Four" (New York, London, Milan, and Paris) Copenhagen Fashion Week has solidified Copenhagen's place on the global fashion map according to Style.
Known for its commitment to sustainability and fresh, contemporary brands like Ganni and Saks Potts, the street style at Copenhagen Fashion Week has also become a major influence. Back in 2018, the signature Copenhagen look was all about vibrant, printed dresses paired with practical, sneakers or bright Havaianas—perfect for a city where cycling to shows is the norm. However, fashion trends can be unpredictable—one moment, heels are declared "over," and the next, they're back with a vengeance. After months of cozying up in slippers and Birkenstocks during lockdown, brands like Versace and Saint Laurent encouraged us to step out in towering platforms. Celebs like Anne Hathaway and Dua Lipa embraced the trend, but it didn’t take long for most of us to revert to comfortable flats. Lately, front rows have been filled with fancy flats like Alaïa’s crystal-covered Mary Janes rather than sky-high heels.
Given Copenhagen’s cobbled streets and love for cycling, it’s no surprise that ballet flats have become a go-to. On the ground in Copenhagen, British Vogue’s Joy Montgomery has noticed this heel revival, paired with jorts and capri pants for a classic ‘90s vibe. Carrie Bradshaw would definitely approve, especially of those low, strappy mules that are now being styled with nostalgic trends like bubble-hem skirts and cargo pants. Even better, some of these styles, like Hanna Stefansson’s strappy sandals, are practical enough for a bike ride—proof that comfort and fashion can indeed go hand in hand.
